Forecast Foibles

Some forecasting numbers hit the street this past week.  The Architectural Billings Index did go lower in April at 43.2 (from 44.1 in March), and honestly, I thought it would’ve been worse.  The worrisome news was that once again, the project inquiries index was at 48 (50 is break even), which has been an index that has been holding up until recently.  When inquiries were coming in, that at least showed there’s still a hunger, so seeing a negative here is not great.  Meanwhile, on the Construction Stress Index, “on hold” private sector projects have increased 40%, and abandoned ones have increased 14% in the past year.  Most of the on-hold are waiting on the rates, and whatever the final fallout of the trade war will be.  Hopefully, we don’t see those going into the abandoned bucket.  If you missed Katy Devlin’s State of the Industry by the Numbers, she hit on tariffs and their effects, including supply chain, US GDP, Interest rates, Construction Spending, Forecasts, and much more.  Very interesting… A few questions, including one on isolating tariff costs, are especially important.  And if you missed it, you can catch a replay of it: https://www.glass.org/blog/2025/state-industry-numbers

As it’s always noted here, it's going to be bumpy. Make sure you are diversified and in total control of your costing… and of course, work with partners and suppliers you can trust. (Katy noted this, too, in her presentation.)

-- To keep yourself sane and positive… check out my latest podcast because the two guests really give you hope thanks to their energy and talent. James Hatch of Kovach and Lauren Dunford of Guidewheel surely caught on nicely in the first week of the podcast release, and a lot of great feedback on both.  Good listening for the holiday weekend! Check ‘em out and recognize those working hard to bring advancements to our space!

-- Congrats to Alex Burleson on his new gig as Wholesale Sales Manager at UGT Fabrication in Deland, Florida (home of Stetson U and a place where I saw a basketball game while somehow sitting in the best seats right next to the President of the school.  I was there, though, for Stetson’s opponent- Ohio U., and I don’t think she or anyone else was happy about that!) Anyway, it was great to see Alex land at a company with strong potential, and his connections will surely help them achieve it.  Happy for you, Alex!

-- May is Mental Health Awareness Month… and with this month almost over, please don’t relax on caring about Mental Health.  This is truly an all-year, all-the-time effort. I look at the efforts from people like Cal Beyer and David Argus, and while we all can’t get to their passion level, we owe it to them and our fellow people out there to do the best we can.  I shared some pieces on Mental Health Awareness earlier this month- but more can be found at this spot from the NGA- https://www.glass.org/news/2025/nga-spotlights-mental-health-awareness-may. Let’s keep the effort up no matter what the calendar says!

-- Last this week…  I saw this post from Kat Downen https://www.linkedin.com/posts/katdee_digitalmarketing-management-innovation-activity-7327678992600240130-jQ47/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAAJ9RwkBcZK4q7agAbE7C94egm0QkQnmJJA, and while the text got me going, it was the video at the bottom that absolutely mesmerized me. A mama duck and firefighters are saving the rest of her family that fell into a sewer drain.  This video is a few years old, but it still has the same effect.  Really cool watching the mama duck and the whole process unfold.  Yes, I am a huge softie for animal stuff like this… but when you have so much frustrating business news… an easy and uplifting piece really comes in clutch!

PROJECT of the WEEK

To Florida we go… this is Rhyno Glass and their new facility! They transformed an old gym into the new and improved Rhyno Glass location. According to the post, they renovated the entire building from the ground up, did all the structural steel and glazing design in-house, and created a beautiful and safe environment fit for their employees. No doubt this project showcases all of Rhyno’s structural glazing fabrication and installation abilities. Congrats to the team on a great job!

Impressive Leaders

((Reminder- follow me on LinkedIn-where I post each Sunday. Thanks!))

The latest From the Fabricator podcast is live with two inspiring guests.  I kick it off with James Hatch of Kovach.  He and I may have chatted a bit over the years, but this was my first extended time with him, and I was extremely impressed.  What he’s done and the excitement around what Kovach does is something to behold.  Great stuff.  Then to a person and company that I think will be big in our industry, and not for glass or glazing, but for improving the performance of our machinery.  I caught up with Lauren Dunford of Guidewheel, and they have a product that allows that crucial visibility on how your machinery is performing.  She’s incredibly sharp and engaging and brought tremendous energy to the podcast.  So I think you all will enjoy this episode a lot.  THANK YOU, as always, for listening/watching and obviously sharing, as the audio stats just keep climbing!

-- Some economic forecasting notes… the latest Dodge Momentum Index was positive but only because of the growth of data centers.  That index is now tracking closer to the reality most of us are experiencing.  Meanwhile, the next Architectural Billings Index will be released this Wednesday, and I expect it to be very ugly.  The index was captured in the heat of the initial tariff mess & confusion, and I will be stunned if it's above 44. (Remember 50 is break-even)  I have been surprised before, though…. Meanwhile, the amazing Katy Devlin of the NGA will present on Thirsty Thursday (5/22), providing a rundown of the industry's economic landscape.  Katy’s presentations are always ultra informative and super helpful.  This event from the NGA is free to attend (but registration is needed), so go ahead and sign up now and don’t miss it. https://members.glass.org/cvweb/cgi-bin/eventsdll.dll/EventInfo?sessionaltcd=TT25-05

-- There’s an upcoming California Glass Association event to be held at Diamon-Fusion International on June 19th that is not your typical gathering.  It is a “Happy Hour” format but featuring Music, Magic, and Martial Arts hosted by Diamon-Fusion International (DFI).  I was invited but have a scheduling conflict, so because of that, Adam Zax of DFI gave me a personal preview of the magic portion of the event- and folks, it is pretty cool.  Adam was able to perform his magic act via phone, and it worked… so I can only imagine how great it will be in person.  He also previewed the Martial Arts, which I think will catch a lot of eyeballs, and then he told me that the “Industry Front Man” Carl Christ will be back on the mic, providing the music.  Those who may not know it, but Carl was a legit rock star back in the day and I am super bummed to miss it.  Kind of like when McCartney and Lennon decided to jam a few years after the Beatles broke up. How do you miss that?  Anyway, if you're in California, make your way there for this one!

-- So last week, I teased “Barndos” – a take-off on Condos built in a barn style. Evidently, it's become a hot style, but until my guy James Esver says it is a trend, I am not believing it. Anyway, check out the latest here. Who knew that the “Barndominium” look would be the next big thing?  https://www.builderonline.com/design/plans/house-plan-of-the-week-barndos-go-modern_o?utm_source=newsletter&utm_content=Article&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=BP_042525&&oly_enc_id=1016C4582389A7V

-- Last this week… many of you know I love lists… so much so that my pals Scott Goodman and Joe Staffileno both sent the list of best and hottest places to live and markets.  Below is the Top 10 hottest places to live right now, which is pretty interesting to me.

10- Boulder, CO- Too cold for me- but I think Mike Rapp of PDS IG lives there or close- so it must be good.

9- Austin, TX- This tracks for the most part, though, until that airport gets upgraded, not for me

8- Virginia Beach, VA- Visited a long time ago- was nice- but had no idea it's the 8th best sort of nice.

7- Huntsville, AL- I have only driven through, but this city has been ranking high for a while

6- Raleigh, NC- Carolinas are popular, and I do like this city quite a bit

5- Charlotte, NC- Only on here because the rock star Mel Dettmer lives there

4- Greenville, SC- Love this one- and my college buddy Bob Mihalic was way ahead of the curve moving there years ago.

3- Colorado Springs, CO- Sorry.  Too high on this list for me.

2- Boise, ID- Incredibly, another college pal, Nick Jezierny calls this place home and can vouch for how nice. (My college friends obviously have good taste in where they live)

And #1- Naples, FL!  Tremendous choice- great area and people.

See the whole list here: https://realestate.usnews.com/places/rankings/best-places-to-live and feel free to weigh in on your choices.

TEXAS Delivers

((Reminder- follow me at LinkedIn to see this blog ever Sunday in your feed!--Thanks!!))

I say it all the time.  Texas never disappoints.  And that was surely true this past week at Glass TEXpo in San Antonio.  The wonderful folks at the Texas Glass Association took care of me once again, and I am truly grateful.  The show was busy, and for the most part, the vibe was positive.  But there was that underlying tone of frustration with the market and the new reality of quotes & estimates.  I think we’re in that same boat with the current landscape and the lack of visibility into the future, thanks to the always-changing and confusing mess of the tariffs.  So, folks are adjusting, but it’s just another hurdle to deal with.  Good thing we are resilient and the people I talked to at the show are not letting anything stop them, so that was nice to experience.

As I always do after an industry event- I like to mention some of the folks I ran into and things I noticed along the way- so here goes.  First and foremost, when I mentioned the TGA above- the President this year is Brian Risinger of Country Glass.  That dude is one of the classiest around and just a great person to lead the way there.  Given his responsibilities at the show, it was awesome to get a few minutes with him.  Wade Arnold of USBP/Quikserv held onto his title as one of the best presenters in our industry, with an excellent one about school security and glass and glazing.  If you ever get a chance to see him present, run, don’t walk to that one.

Seeing people I worked with in my past is always fun- but this time I ran into 2 people I had not seen probably in 15+ years.  Carla Styles with YKK has been on fire since I met her long ago- doing great things in our space. She's crushed it over the years. Running into her was super cool!  As was seeing Marlin Burns. He stopped me in my tracks, and it was incredible to catch up and hear his adventures since we worked together.  He is living the life!  I noted last week that I was excited to see David Shaw and that did not disappoint.  He’s looking good and getting better daily! One of the best around.

I love the Champion Glass guys- David Luna, Ray Luna, and Davey Luna are tremendous, and getting a chance to break bread with them was an honor.  Speaking of honors- getting a few minutes with Felix and Regina Munson of Anchor Ventana is massive.  I thoroughly enjoy catching up with them, and I appreciate their drive.  Todd and Kim Joubert of Sage Architectural Products continue to own it out there, and while I think I only get to chat with them at this event, I always appreciate it.

Booth-wise- nothing compared at all to the stunner that Precision Glass put up.  Big time props to Jackie Nguyen there, who carried it from start to finish. The huge IG with decorative showing the details of some of PGI’s capacity was a showstopper.  Also, it was awesome to run into Charlotte Davis there- she recently joined PGI, and that was a great hire.  Also catching much attention were the guys from Z Secure, who showed off their impressive technology, which I think has a place in our world.  Kudos to Tim Miller and Robert McElroy on that.  My pals from Bella Architectural also had an exhibit to remember as well.  Anytime you give guys like Gregg Wakefield and Brian Mudd some space to show off- they deliver!

Quick catch ups with Kirk Johnson (Pulp), Kyle Lindersmith (Burkle), Lindsey and Dustin Price (Texas Glazing Solutions), Alex Buechel (Learn Glazing) Marcus Dreher (MP Drafting) and John Mattie (FHC), were fantastic moments for me. Plus, it's always fun to see Nicola Lattuada and Joe Gates as well. And of course, you can’t have “fun” without the Tristar folks being involved. Congrats to them on their significant anniversary there with so much more to come. Deshun Baker of RACO was a neat one to meet in person finally.  Super sharp guy.

Last it was nice to see Kevin Carrasco of Marsh McLennan especially since I missed his killer speech at the CGA.  But last I saw him he was trying to rescue his bag that was being held hostage there.  Hopefully he found it!   So there ya go- I know I missed a ton to mention (sorry!)- but I loved catching up with all!!

PROJECT of the WEEK

To Florida this week and a different source for the spotlight!  This one is from Instagram and the account of Crawford-Tracey. Beautiful, classy project, and again, can show off all of what our industry can do!  According to the post, Crawford-Tracey handled: •Preconstruction support and project-specific detailing assistance •Installation of Pro-Tech 7SG (ground floors) and Pro-Tech 45SG (second floor) •Large and small missile impact protection •Unitized system installation for faster schedules and greater quality control •Industry-leading fixed system water resistance.

Good stuff! The suppliers are not mentioned, but obviously, whoever it was had to be on their game to meet the standards here. Kudos to all involved on a job well done!
